  1. THE SONG OF WANDERING AENGUS
  2.  
  3. I WENT out to the hazel wood,
  4. Because a fire was in my head,
  5. And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
  6. And hooked a berry to a thread;
  7. And when white moths were on the wing,
  8. And moth-like stars were flickering out,
  9. I dropped the berry in a stream
  10. And caught a little silver trout.
  11. When I had laid it on the floor
  12. I went to blow the fire aflame,
  13. But something rustled on the floor,
  14. And some one called me by my name:
  15. It had become a glimmering girl
  16. With apple blossom in her hair
  17. Who called me by my name and ran
  18. And faded through the brightening air.
  19. Though I am old with wandering
  20. Through hollow lads and hilly lands.
  21. I will find out where she has gone,
  22. And kiss her lips and take her hands;
  23. And walk among long dappled grass,
  24. And pluck till time and times are done
  25. The silver apples of the moon,
  26. The golden apples of the sun.
